In Acedie and Me, the writer Kathleen Norris asks her readers to think about the tasks and chores of a day as “acts of hospitality” to yourself. That is a perspective where you are a guest and a host at the same time.
When you organize and maintain your life so that things work out and move forward for you, you are playing the role of host.
As a guest, you have needs and habits and you are dependent on your host to figure out what to do and how to be at ease.
As a really good guest, you write a thank you note to your host for their acts of hospitality.
Take on the role of yourself-as-guest and write a thank-you note to yourself-as-host. Tell your host how their efforts help make you comfortable in your life.
Even though thank-you notes don’t usually have titles, write a title at the top of what you have written. Write the date somewhere on the page, too.
Here is a more detailed version of these directions.
